15th July 1953: Christie hanged for wife's murder
Serial murderer John Christie, found guilty of killing his wife, was executed at Pentonville Prison in north London.
54-year-old Christie's crimes were uncovered when he moved out of his flat in 10 Rillington Place, Notting Hill, where he had been living with his wife.
The new tenants, whilst trying to find the source of an unpleasant smell, found a body hidden behind a wall.
More corpses, including the body of his wife underneath the floorboards, were discovered as Police searched the house and garden.
Tried at the Old Bailey in June, Christie’s defence that he was insane at the time. It took the jury an hour and 22 minutes to find him guilty and he was sentenced to hang.
Rillington Place has since been demolished, and Bartle Road now stands on the site.
